I recently fitted a replacement Dudley flush syphon, a few days later noticed water dripping from the left hand wing nut thread. I emptied cistern, dried all round the flush down pipe, noticed that black was coming off from the internal washer, so maybe perishing after 27 yrs! Applied Fernox leak sealer all round the washer and is holding at the moment but probably have to take the cistern off at some point to replace washer, doughnut, fixing plate and securing screws. On a YouTube video on the cistern being worked on there was a thin washer between the plate and the cistern. Is this essential, I can't see one on other videos? Also some say to apply plumbers mait to the doughnut, is this necessary and if so do you put it on top, bottom or both?

The internal washer between flush valve and cistern should have been replaced when fitting the new flush valve.
The donut washer is usually all that is needed to seal on the underside.

Thanks for reply but my query was about whether there should be a washer of some sort between the fixing plate under the cistern and the cistern body as one of the videos showed a thin one which the plumber reused, but other videos did not show a washer.

When I have to decouple a cc wc, I replace everything with new.
And I do it with fluidmaster fittings.

As I said ,the donut washer is the only seal required on the underside.

Whatever comes with a kit is what is meant to be used. Kits differ.
Post a link to the video with a time stamp of where the washer is used.
