Ukraine counter offensive

Their operations in the North have slowed down a bit but even there they're still pushing on. They need to prepare before they can try any new breakthroughs but it isn't quiet, just not future textbook and Hollywood movie material action.
I was referring to stalemate situations. The shelling etc just continues and little movement. The blokes reporting does seem to fit in with what can be gained from the news. He is currently favouring Ukraine more. Previously he was favouring Russia for obvious reasons as they were gaining. He blamed that on both sides being effectively organised in the way Soviet armies are but missed the fact that Russia had reorganised certain areas and the command chain changes have probably reduced their efficiency.

There was some tit for tat. Ukraine city looses power followed by one actually in Russia having the same experience. Sounds like it was smaller though. Hard to tell. it sounded like a substation hit.

I'm not sure we have quite grasped the tactics of holding elections.
1. hold election
2. declare people of region want to be part of Russia
3. declare them part of New Russia
4. Defend "New Russia" with additional force and warn the west of the consequences of attacking "New Russia"

All the time he is "demilitarising Nazis". its a foreign war. As soon as he can "defend the motherland". Its an excuse for more excessive force.

Apparently all one way flights out of Moscow are booked solid

And at a very high cost / price :)

Imo if Putin is threatening the nuclear option we / the west should do the same

And whilst we are at it a few of the missiles could go astray and hit the mad mullahs ??? May be

TBH I don't think it matters that much in the grand scheme of things. Why would Ukraine stop attacking? The west supplying weapons? No one will accept the result. Well the west wont anyway and neither will Ukraine. It might be Putin's idea of a sort of unilateral diplomatic solution but fact is he will do what ever he does or is made to do irrespective.

I can understand Zelensky's concern about it but he also says he will drive them out of Crimea.

The curious thing about the Crimea one is attempts to find out indicated that it could well have been valid. A later one about are you happy with your gov didn't go so well but who is in many countries.

It looks like transam is suggesting NATO attacks another country because transam is islamophobic.
It looks like transam would be very content to flatten another country with indiscriminate bombing.
It looks like transam is advocating wide scale terrorism using nuclear bombs.
And I thought andy11 was a savage wanting to kill a few refugees.

NATO was a defensive organisation. In 1995 it transformed into an offensive organisation.
One could argue that that was not what nations signed up for. ;)

It matters to a Russian domestic audience, and that is all Putin is concerned with.
Crimea is, in the eyes of Russian domestic audience, now part of Russian territory.
That equally applies to any other regions that Russia currently occupies, and referenda give Russia the supposed authority to defend those regions, even against Ukraine's attempt to regain lost ground.
Putin can then argue, to his domestic audience, that Russian territorial integrity is under attack. That suffices for him to resort to greater force, and other policies such as tactical nuclear weapons, mobilising reserves, conscripts, regular army, gearing up for massive arms manufacturing, etc.

They wanted their generals back.

That applies to just about all of his televised speeches. A fact that our media doesn't point out. All politicians do similar at times. They talk to their public.

Use of nukes. They have their complications radiation being a main one. I have a theory that weapon bans that are generally banned by all are because of the complications of using them. Eg short range tactical nukes. They even looked at nuclear artillery shells and items similar to anti tank hand held missile launchers and even showed troops nuke explosions to get them used to them. Neuton bombs have conventional yields in the low kilotonne range. I'd suspect there are designer bombs that make some use of the neutron feature as well as blast.

Our legacy media also doesn't point out that's exactly what our politicians do at all times. That's not the job of legacy media.

Both my and motorbiking's comment referred specifically to the current war between Ukraine and Russia.
Putin wants an excuse, as far as the Russian population are concerned, to up the ante with bigger weapons, deployment of more troops, etc, by referring to the integrity of Russian territory.
He can only do that by holding sham elections on 'conquered Ukraine territory, claiming it as now Russian.

Ukraine has consistently avoided attacking targets on Russian territory to avoid this idea of Russia being endangered per se.

Yes - it turns in to a Ukrainian invasion of Russia, backed by Evil NATO countries like the UK.

It wasn't long ago that some on this forum were gloating that the introduction of sanctions against the Russians would result in the collapse of the Russian economy and widespread suffering amongst ordinary Russians.
It seems their optimism was premature.

That does seem to be happening.

They have to a limited extent. This seems to relate to Biden not providing longer range missiles. For various reasons I wonder if that might change at some point.

But sanctioned by the UN...

I think you'll find that NATO nations signed up to that!

(just pointing out the facts for the russian apologists on here)
