The Commodification of higher education has meant the training of our nurses, doctors, radiographers etc has become profit driven.

Its not a surprise that removing Nursing bursaries combined with making it a money making degree course…..has led to a shortage of nurses.

I believe it all started under Labour and Tony Blair with his education, education, education mantra and the banning of new grammar schools. In reality, it meant cram as many kids as you can into universities and funding was geared to that. Let’s get all those computer programmers, graphic designers, dance and music degrees. Never mind who will be emptying our bins, serving our food, sweeping our streets, fixing our cars, building our homes etc - we can buy all that in, cheaply, from abroad. Just keep telling the kids that they can be whatever they want to be in this new labour society. All of a sudden, nobody wants to empty bins, sweep streets, serve food or get their hands dirty in a manual job as it’s too far beneath what they have been told to expect. How about starting there?

In the same way as it prevented (or more accurately, de-incentivised) UK companies and the NHS to train UK workers. It allowed anyone from the EU who were on lower wages to just come over here and gradually the system became too dependent on them at the expense of U.K. workers.
