How to wire this 2 gang, 2 way switch into an intermediate one?

Brown into one L1 on both switches and what was in L2 on old switch into either L2 on new

I've not noticed that layout before
Brown into one L1 on both switches and what was in L2 on old switch into either L2 on new
I assume you are correct, it certainly looks you should be and would be my immediate assumption.

But if it doesn't work, try
Brown that was in COMMON into one L1 on both switches and what was in L2 on old switches into other L1 on new

The switches are 'normal'; the labelling L1/L2 is the wrong way round.

If it upsets you, just fit the switch upside down.
Hope you aren’t catching pedant’s disease. We already have one incurable case on here!
Not pedantic but mistaken.

I was thinking the L1s and L2s were "normally" on the sides; not top and bottom, but apparently not -

This does seem illogical as one L1 is connected to an L2 and vice versa.

Are there none marked as I am thinking?

Yes, I thought so: there are some to be found marked as I thought; much more sensible - and some have L1 - L4.

This is definitely the format I'm most accustomed to then 1-4 next then L1 L2 L1' L2'. I don't recall ever finding the format of the Hamilton but of course having made that statement it's not exactly something I'd actually be looking for. Having handled so many the markings tend to fade into insignificance.
