I don't know about your one in particular, but if you take it apart you will probably find the string is tied to the lever of a microswitch.
So you could fit either a new string, or a new switch.
Ic you can post a better photo, and the di ensions, I might know if there is a similar or better fan at a good price.

Take off the cover and tie a knot or fit a new cord.
