Ones that lead to a fluorescent tube
:?:

Why add spurs when the used of high current devices might regularly exceed the capacity of the fuse.
Then use cable suitable for the current.

Plus when the ring is near its legal limits in terms of area or length, it’s safer to extend the ring rather than load it with spurs.
That is not always the case.
It depends on where the spur is connected.
The area is irrelevant.

An exception that prove the rule
:)

A fluorescent tube is regarded as old fashioned in a house but is as good or better than downlighters, my point is that choice of spurs versus rings is a subjective judgement
Then use cable suitable for the current.
The 2.5mm is already fitted
That is not always the case.
It depends on where the spur is connected.
The area is irrelevant.
Area is relevant according to many sources, in my case the ring length and area already exceed 100 metres/ sq metres

So my age old saying "You put Bulbs in Gardens and Lamps in Lampholders!" is incorrect? or Correct? Ho heck.
As you know, the first part has always been correct, but I don't think that the second was correct in either of our youths, was it? The only (electrical) 'lamps' we knew about in those days were the ones we put (light) bulbs into, weren't they?

I can't recall with certainty .... when light bulbs were bulbs, were the things we put into them already called 'lamp-holders'? If so, that just adds to the confusion!
It`s a bit like when you think "Oh Heck, I remember when my parents said that to me and now I`m saying the same thing to my children, oh it can`t be right, oh I am becoming like my parents. Aggghhh " Dread thoughts :mad::mad:
That's a bit like what I frequently say to EFLI. He ia unhappy about language having 'evolved' since he was a youngster because lots of people made mistakes (used language incorrectly'. What he doesn't seem to realise is that his parents undoubtedly regarded some of thee language of his you as 'incorrect' (for the same reason, just as his parents' parents probably said about his parents 'incorrect' language ... and so on back to the birth of mankind!

Kind Regards, John

Maybe - but that does not mean we have to carry on the so-called evolution instead of trying to avoid it by correcting people.

I've just been notified that EFLI quoted my post 28 minutes ago, but the only post quoted 28 minutes ago is JW2. I have had this before in the GD forum where my posts have been attributed to another poster. Software error, or the hand of a moderator?

We differ in that you seem to regard evolution as bad, maybe even 'evil', because it inevitability results from 'mistakes. That's true even of biological evolution, since it's a result of 'mistakes' (gene mutations at the time of cell division - but, without that series of 'mistakes', the human race would not exist.

If, over the centuries, we had been successful in avoiding evolution of language by correcting all 'mistakes' immediately they arose, then we would all today be speaking and writing the English of Chaucer, Beowolf or earlier - is that how you would have liked it to be?

Kind Regards, John

I certainly agree with you about evolution John.
All those mistakes makes us what we are.
All those mistakes (mutations of our DNA etc ) makes us more diverse and advances us.
So those mistakes certainly win my vote - If we are allowed to vote on it.
I do have my little saying about Bulbs v Lamps but it is rather tongue in cheek though - sense of humour type thingy.
There are some mistakes that do wind me up though and I too, like EFLI, try to correct them.
Certain things we get hammered into our heads at school so I suppose that might bias us a bit.
AM and PM as I`ve mentioned previously - oohh that winds me up with a vengeance.
Grocer`s apostrophe (Grocers apostrophe ?) that too - but with a bit of mirth.
PAT Testing and PIN Numbers - yes I mentioned them before (and a few more).
I suppose that means that I have got a foot in both camps really :D

I`ll not mention Live or Spur !

You always say that as if I am supposed to respond with "Oh bugger, yes, we wouldn't want that." rather than "So what? How would we know any different?".

Much like:

If humans did not exist, would you be upset?

What if the recent youngsters' use of 'wicked' to mean good had become the 'norm' and everyone was using it such that the news reported that "Netanyahu says peace settlement in the middle east was wicked" and "The King was hoping for a long and wicked reign": how would that be a good thing?

For what it's worth, I used to use the terms 'bulb' and 'lamp' interchangeably in my youth, until around 10 years ago.
I worked in a high school where all our projectors were hitting a certain age and the lamps were dropping like flies.
The replacement 'lamps' as many of you may know, were hideously expensive:

However, we learned we could buy just the 'bulb' separately and transplant it into the frame that makes up the replaceable lamp unit:

Saved a ton of money doing that.
Ever since then, my understanding of the term changed slightly and I came to use the term 'bulb' for any type of light source with a glass envelope (i.e. a typical 'glass bulb'). However, I tend to use the term 'lamp' for a fluorescent tube, so perhaps I contradict myself there.

AM and PM as I`ve mentioned previously - oohh that winds me up with a vengeance.
When people say "3AM in the morning"... I can't let go of that one.
What else would you be referring to? "3AM in the afternoon?"

PAT Testing and PIN Numbers - yes I mentioned them before (and a few more).
It does wind me up when the term 'PAT testing' is used.
However, I've given up correcting people, and sometimes just throw the term around myself for ease of conversation as the alternative is to say something like "That device needs PAT'ing..." which causes a great deal of confusion from other participants in the conversation.

You didn't need to extend the ring; it is permitted to place the FCU at any point on the spur - the cable - but then obviously the spur - the cable - has to be connected to the ring by other means.
I recently added a Fused Connection Unit in my living room for an electric fireplace.
I extended the ring to include this FCU for two simple reasons:-
1. It was easy due to the proximity of an adjacent double socket
2. I hate trying to cram 3x 2.5mm cables in socket terminals - I found this much easier

AM - After Midnight
PM - Pefore Midnight
Brill I like it :D
I bet that when you were a kid, like us lot, watching the heroics of the tracey lads in Thunderbirds and they gave the acknowledgment " FAB Scott" & FAB Virgil" etc then we all thought it must be a shorthand way of saying "Funderbirds Are Blue"
