Hello, we are looking to buy a property and it has pull chord lights in the bedrooms. We are not sure if it is a huge cost to replace that with a wall switch. We are new to all this and have no idea on the cost to make such changes. I am assuming it will require creating way for the wires to the new switch on the wall so potentially a fairly big replastering and decoration job involved? Please if anyone can suggest the potential cost to carry out the replacements. Thanks.

A easy way to DIY - add another circuit without chasing in the wall.

Replacing a pull cord switch with a switch on the wall would be a simple job, if you know what you're doing.

If not, then an electrician would do it easily.

@Netnot You haven't answered this basic question
are you sure it hasn't got wall switches as well?

If you have, then its a simple job to just remove the pull cord. If you want to keep a bed-side switch, then the choices are:
Chase new cable in to the wall
or
Fit a kinetic switch (a wireless switch) at the bed-side and a receiver up in the ceiling - I assume you have access to the loft?

Pedant point: a chord is what you play on a piano. A cord is what cowboys use to tie up indians.

Getting a switch where you want it is not easy, I had in last house three lights in the master bedroom, one on ceiling and one either side of the bed as reading lamps, with a three gang switch at the door, and a pair of two gang switches either side of the bed, most were two way, one was intermediate, so either of us could switch main light on/off from bed or door, and we could also turn our reading lights on/off from bed or door. This rather fixed the position of the bed, but otherwise worked well.

However in this house just a switch by the door, a smart switch so hey google turn Eric's/Linda's bedroom lights on/off works without any complex wiring, when my wife had knee done, used dinning room as a bedroom, so swapped the wall switch for a smart one, and put a button on the bed, this one

it was magnetic so stuck to bed frame, it was simply not used, she just used voice commands, so re-used as a door bell push button, OK if we still slept together then voice not so good, but there are so many wireless options now. Loosing use of fingers.

Looks to me that the light in the pictures would be over the bed, and there would be another light, probably near the window.
With the arrangement, the light over the bed would possibly be separately switched.

Old old hat now, and desperately old fashioned - people tend to have one light in the centre of the room.

If you haven't got it already, consider proper 2-way switching - at the door and the bed position.

As someone said, the wireless kinetic set up would save a lot of damage to the wall.
