Watch out, Rachel from accounts has got her pen and paper out.

Yes, it isn't about banning cars and it isn't being backed by "ridiculous tree huggers". It makes absolute sense to travel 10 mins to see a doctor rather than 40 mins. Is that really so bad?

I live in a 15 minute village, and the world hasn't fallen apart.
It's not that simple. Of course to be fair it never is.

Some things make sense to centralise, others less so. Once you put a nonsense label like "15 minutes" on it, you set a ridiculous goal.

For everyone to be 15/10mins on foot/bike away from most things, impacts logistics. There can be economies of scale which are lost. Also specialisation becomes difficult with things like hospitals.

When it comes to air travel. There comes a point where one centralised airport becomes too big. IMO as a regular user of Heathrow, we are already there.

We can't achieve it.

Why?

Cause it would require tier one services adequately spread across local communities. Health, education, public transport, policing etc.

We HAD 15 minute cities/towns years ago. Community police stations, cottage hospitals, easy access to GPs, decent shops etc.

You couldn't make some of this sh1te up. Oh we've had a great idea ... let's replicate what we already had decades ago but did away with.

then the world got crowded...you can find "15 minute communities" throughout any city in the UK. Shops, houses, schools etc. Don't get hung up on the little things and all will be well within your wold grasshopper.

We already have in a lot of places.

What is sh!te about the concept? Do you not think it makes sense to have what you need closer to you as a general principle?
When I say couldn't make this sh1te up, I'm referring to things that end up going full circle after decades of ludicrous government/council decisions based on short termism, underinvestment etc.

Take something like dentists. The only reason folk have to travel sometimes an hour plus to see a dentist is why?
Why would folk rather use their cars than public transport?
Why do folk want to go to out of town shopping centres rather than their sh1te local high street?

Khan's going to object to the third runway, even if he needs to take it through the courts.

And folk wonder why we can't get anything done?

Yes, good point, but again, all 15 min cities does is have that dentist closer to where people need him/her.

I'm not saying it's easy to do, I just despair when some say it is intended to keep people within their 15min neighbourhood and you can never leave, or you will be shot. I know you haven't said that but some think it is the work of the devil.

I think it is better to have services, and other things, local to population centres. Most places will do that differently, there is no set model for it.

He's not opposed to expansion, but, rightly or wrongly, he prefers Gatwick to Heathrow.
He needs to concentrate on getting crime down in his patch instead of trying to block initiatives that could aid growth.

It takes me 20 mins to walk to our dentist on a sunny day - 10 minutes by bus if it's raining. Most amenities are within easy reach unless you live in remote countryside, which the majority of folk do not. It's an American concept from the Tech Bro's who can't be hasseled with putting on socks of a day before rambling to the coffee shop for a full foam latte with whipped cream, extra nutmeg and chocolate sprinkles. Hold the sauce.

The Met moved out of special measures this week to the next higher ranking. I saw one quote as "going from utter **** to ****". Still it's progress.

That's a price the government will happily pay, it leaves the torey's who win the next Mayoral election in the embarrassing position of opposing growth.

crime is related to poverty
and poverty is related to wealth inequality
and wealth inequality is something you claim cant be improved

Sadiq Khan cant sort out the causes of crime
