Reform lead the polls

Okay, last word Larry. I’ll let you have it. Oops, I didn’t. Come on, just one more last word from you.

I thought an ATA carnet was valid for a year precisely to stop the need to keep listing everything each way every time? I’m sure that’s what someone I know who works in the EU regularly uses and takes his van and tools abroad. I’ll have to check with him next time I see him.

Circling back to this , I went to the motorcycle show at Excel this morning. In the car with me was my mate who works at a Lotus specialist and the other person I know that regularly works in Europe, a flooring contractor. He has the contract for the Lego and Swarovski stores. The Lotus tech says he doesn’t do it anymore as they used to do it for a few of their bigger fleet customers that raced their private cars but they have since stopped coming to the workshop because it’s now in Khans ULEZ and they have lost a lot of customers because of it but he tells me of the time he took a Lotus chassis in a transit to France to sell it to someone over there which was a bit naughty but they went on a Spa weekend and just covered it with toolboxes, tyres and spares AS THEY DON'T BOTHER CHECKING THEM. They only time he was ever stopped was when about 6 vehicles were stopped at the same time and directed to a hanger. They were asked if they had been metal detecting (apparently a lot of metal detectorists go there looking for WW2 treasure) or whether anyone in the van was having chemotherapy. Apparently one of the vans had set off a radiation detector. All vans were searched, no interest in any of the tools or spares and nothing was found (radiation wise). In the end, the vans had to go back through the radiation detector individually but again nothing was found. It was late at night/early morning and he thinks it may have been a training exercise. The flooring contractor said they used to have to itemise what they were carrying but that was only for the first 3 or 4 months and now, THEY CHECK NOTHING. He just drives his van onto the freight train, fully loaded with tools and stock. Only problem he ever had was when he was going to Dublin. The van was stopped, they looked in the back of the van, it was full with tools and stock and all they said was "Jesus, you're fully loaded" and waved him through. Only aggro he got, was when he purchased stuff in the south and wanted to claim the vat back. He said everyone gets round it by saying they bought it in Northern Ireland.

Basically, to summarise: The experience of those that I know, say it's not really a big deal to travel to the EU in a signwritten van full of tools and stock. Mind you, they were both Brexit voters so unlike remainers, they are not looking to dramatise it.

Great that you talk from 2nd hand and not experience

I talk from experience.

Maybe my van travelling with a rally car gives a few clues out.

Try a few different ways., I have

Van with my own trailer and no car on it
Van with my trailer and a car that isn't mine
Van with a trailer that's not mine and a car that's not mine
Van with a trailer owned by a 2nd party and a car owned by a 3rd party.

Then add tools and equipment to it.

Come back when you've tried it, not when you've heard someone talking about it

You don’t say what happened and if you did or did not have a carnet.

Seems hundreds and hundreds manage it without a problem. I wonder why you are so special.

Well that’s odd the music industry, entertainment industry and exhibition industry all say it’s a significant problem that has seriously damaged the industry.

No idea. Forget what you read and how you think things are supposed to be. I don’t know anyone personally in the music industry to ask if their personal experiences, do you? All I am recounting is what I was told by two people I know that have personal experience of going through the 'torture' of travelling to the EU. Obviously you’re in the remainer camp and don't want to hear that. I couldn’t give a toss whether you or carman believe it or not. I believe what I was told by those with actual experience of travelling, in a van, with tools, with stock, to carry out work in the EU. IT. AIN'T. HARD.

Just try it !

I've done it too.

So what !
Looks like we both don't believe each other. Oh well, no surprises there. The flooring contractor is going to a job Germany in two weeks time for a fortnight. I'd better tell him he's been dreaming for the last couple of years and not to bother any more.

Your story is just BS

Depends on the setup .

If it's 1 car with very few spares going to a single venue event it's usually a written inventory and oral declaration.

If it's a bigger setup then a carnet.

The issue is that it is never the same setup so every time is different. That's the real issue.

It's not easy to throw a tarp over a van full of tools and equipment with a trailer and a car attached.

The fact the trailer may or may not be mine, and the car isn't mine ALWAYS draws attention
