Hi there,

We've recently bought a Victorian home from the 1890s which has this weird hatch to the side of the house that goes directly into the chimney brest.

Anyone know what it was used for?

Would it be worth us just bricking it up?

There's no information online for the company IVO Engineering & Construction LTD London NW10

I saw Hugh Fearnly-Wittingstall use something like that to smoke food. His one was about 8ft high though. How high is your one?

About 5ft high from the ground - I'll try google now to see if I can find out more about what he did

It is a draught regulator. Used to ( automatically ? ) reduce the draft at the fire place to reduce the rate of burning.

If it can be opened still, especially from outside then it's a security risk. Blaggers come in all sizes and one will be able to squeeze through that.

You are so right. My parents were once burgalled by someone who squeezed through a 5 inch gap between two rooves then broke into the house through an internal window that was approx 15 inch square.
