"" Is Tesla’s self-driving tech a ticking time bomb? And is Musk getting regulators fired to cover it up? Let’s break down Mark Rober’s shocking test results and find out. ""

Is it as bad as a Turkish taxi driver?
They're worse than a shopping trolley on ice.

Funnily enough I've recently been watching some YT clips of a guy that tests how good the system is in every day driving situations. It's often found to be lacking. e.g. the car decided it was safe to pull out to overtake a slower vehicle. It didn't however pick up the presence of an oncoming vehicle. Obviously the YT guy corrected the manoeuvre. Even with basic things e.g. pulling out at a junction, it often fails to pick up on things that could lead to a collision. It also regularly failed to adhere to speed limits.

It's all very well to say humans make these mistakes daily, however surely the whole point of an automatic vehicle is to take most of the driving task away from the driver. If you still need to remain fully alert with your hands hovering over the steering wheel, what's the point?

I'm sure as the years roll by these issues will be ironed out. I'm hoping if I'm lucky enough to reach old age, by that time we'll have vehicles that'll take you from a to b with (genuine) minimal input.

An aeroplane 'flying itself' needs, for 85/90% of the journey, only to keep in a 2 mile wide corridor at the correct altitude. Cars... bit more involved.

There are so many micro assessments and decisions we make as drivers, I reckon a near full-proof solution is still years away. I'll stop short of saying decades given the advances in tech, however we're not near yet in terms of a 'set and forget' solution.

with 2 pilots constantly overlooking
That is the point, Tezla never said the car could be driven without the driver paying attention to the road and ready to take control, at a moment notice, like a pilot

Basic electric cars self drive in traffic if they have the radar fitted, it can help if you are stuck in slow moving traffic

No artificial intelligence can predict what bad drivers are about to do to.
The days a self driven car will be able to safely navigate the roads of Cairo, Mumbai, Nairobi, Naples or Lagos are far, very far.

My old A6 already had that technology and worked perfectly.
Was a diesel though...

It's as safe as you make it.

If you are responsible it is like having a second set of eyes on the road and you double check each other.
