System boiler recommendations (hot water priority ~5kW heatloss)

If you are looking at a heat pump long term or sooner, with or without grant the Riello NXHM (R32) is tried and trusted or smaller, the Carrier AquaSnap (R290).

If you want a hybrid and keep your boiler, no grant at the moment, then either will communicate with the Vokèra Pinnacle or Synergy boilers by Modbus for full integration with solar, or just by simple switching.

But why would anyone write off 7.5k? Plenty of independents are mcs registered, and who won’t just quote a 7kw or 10kw vaillant as standard.

Crazy imo to have a large storage battery as well and not at least get a bespoke quote. Plus low heat losses as well and the ashp can modulate to lower flow temps, perfectly suited to weather comp. You will be saving many hundreds if not thousands of pounds a year, and more future proof. I thought the blocker was going to be something like outdoor space.
Unfortunately there are some BUS grant harvesters out there who just add the grant money to the quote by inflating their prices.

This is an ongoing problem whenever the government offers grants for anything but is compounded my the MCS monopoly.

Wow ok. HP ready cylinder, battery, solar….and you still want to put a boiler in?

We already had the cylinder installed and it just wouldn’t compute with the likes of octopus who would give us a standard price. There are some decent cheaper ashps as well….the vaillant quotes were quite expensive.

Maybe I am making the wrong decision then. The cylinder is only heat pump compatible with an external heat exchanger which is about £400. Although I am sure with the 17kW coil and circulation pump going it would probably be fine.

Have you seen https://coolenergyshop.com/pages/free-heat-pump-kit - Any thoughts?

Shame octopus whacked their prices up so much.

How likely am I to get the ASHP installed for say £1k + BUS grant? Appreciate it depends on my house but most of my radiators are new and over spec already. Heatpunk seemed to think they were OK. The cylinder and access to the heating loop is all in the garage and the ASHP unit can be installed right outside the garage.

Not heard of that company before.

Price wise as you say all depends on the existing radiator specs. Difficult to predict really. Ours was 5.5k with 5 rad changes and a 12kW clivet, which felt like quite a lot to be honest but a lot of the quotes were broadly similar in terms of labour. If you only need a 7 or 8kW unit, and if you have less plumbing work, possibly? Another ashp owner around the corner from us with a much better insulated house than ours, and some UFH, had theirs installed by the same company we used for around the 1k figure. They had the 8kW clivet.

Vaillants were around a 2k premium we found- with no discernible benefit that we could see other than possibly slightly better aftersales, and up to 75 oC flow temp which seems pretty pointless.

I wouldn't disagree with the above that the bus grant leads to some problems regarding inflated quotes.

We have a 13.5kw battery (powerwall) and at present it looks to be around £800pa savings taking advantage of tariffs such as cosy etc. Without the battery our bills looked quite similar but with a vastly more comfortable house.

I will try to get some quotes and see what these MCS umbrella schemes say. I'm mid terrace so pretty cosy! My solar has a similar size battery but I was looking at doubling it anyway.

80kWh of gas was my worst day this winter so would need quite a few batteries to cover that including the house load! Although with cosy you get a good few periods to recharge and run the pump. With a COP of 4 that is still 20kWh for heating and about 10kWh for house load.
