The two defendants have been found guilty and will doubtless get long prison sentences. Do we want to be filling up prisons because a tree has been cut down?

in this case YES - keep them locked up until its fully grown

Put up Taxes and build more prisons - lets stamp out crime - the namby pamby liberal lefts long experiment into being more understanding and more forgiving has failed - country is getting out of control

Look at Saudi Arabia into how harsh sentencing stamps out crime

Saudi v UK

Total crimes per 10003.88
Ranked 71st.
109.96
Ranked 4th. 28 times more than Saudi Arabia

I'm not sure I can get to the value that the tree was wroth many £100ks. Some have it valued at between 300-600k.
  • Over £5,000: Maximum sentence is 10 years imprisonment in Crown Court.
  • Under £5,000: Maximum sentence is 3 months imprisonment and/or a fine of up to £2,500 in Magistrates' Court.

I think I will put up with the status quo here

Saudi Arabia has a criminal justice system based on Shari'ah. Execution is usually carried out by beheading with a sword, but may occasionally be performed by shooting or firing squad.[17]

Sentences are primarily given on confession. Human Rights Watch says the majority of people are tortured to obtain confession and courts have not investigated it.[citation needed] As of April 2020, minors who commit crimes will no longer face execution when they turn 18, and would instead face a maximum of 10 years in juvenile detention facility.[18]

A 2018 report by the European Saudi Organization for Human Rights (ESOHR) asserts that the number of beheadings in the kingdom during the first quarter of 2018 rose by over 70 percent compared to the same period in 2017.[19] 2024 was the year with the highest number of beheadings in several decades (330).[16][11]

Is prisons were such a deterrent, why aren't they empty?

lets have a look at some data and see if you are correct

America 1970 prison population 338,029
America 2018 prison population 2.3 million

but violent crime rate per 100,000 people was higher in 2018 than 1970

of course if you wanted to look at the profits of the privatised USA prison system versus sentence length and numbers incarcerated..........yeah theres a link. Gosh the biggest private prison businesses are all major donors to the republican party and when they are in power prison numbers shoot up.

the young guy had a long running obsession about the Sycamore Gap tree..............kind of a weird obsession

That too, would make them empt(ier).
its because they keep going back for little sentences

Why is there only a fraction of the crimes in Saudi? is it because they are more interested in the rights of the law abiding, and give little rights to the criminals - a sort of entire juxtaposition to our own virtue signally criminal justice system
