Shorten chain?

Various options- hack saw, angle grinder, bolt cutter.

Depends on the size/metal.

Or just do it the easy way:
Enclose the chain in a localised temporal gravity freeze field, and keep it there until the expansion of the rest of the universe gets to the point when the chain length is at the (relatively) short length you require.

Pleased that you have found a solution.

You did not give enough information on the type of chain to allow anyone on here to offer useful advice. The chain that you wanted to shorten could have been anything from the chain on a bath plug to the chain on a ships anchor.

Bought bolt cutters in the end to do it. Short ones no good.....

I purchased bolt cutters specifically to cut through relatively mild steel chains for hanging items at trade shows. They are about 36" long. The only time I needed to cut through hardened steel was a padlock for an elderly neighbour who had lost the key. I didn't measure the diameter of the metal but I am guessing it was between 6 or 8mm. I am no Charles Atlas, but it cut through. I was glad because otherwise I would have to have taken a 25m extension lead and my corded angle grinder.

Rarely used, but useful.

The 'jack chain', can be adjusted (shortened or lengthened) with nothing more than a pair of pliers. They are made from a series of S's with the ends, bent shut.
