Manchester airport assault

yep. But hard to ignore the image of the wpc, with her face/nose smashed and blood pouring out.

but it happened after the assault.
He was doubtless protective of her as a female colleague. I have no sympathy for her assailants, they packed a powerful punch, possibly amateur boxers. I cannot see the PC being prosecuted.

They are trying to argue self defence, it's the only angle they have. They have done a good job, but the question remains is was the self defence proportionate even if it was genuine, that's assuming the jury even entertain the idea.

As already mentioned, I haven't followed the trial.

I can see that if you thought three strangers were attacking you from behind, you might be terrified. Especially after you had just been involved in another fight. But once you realised they were actually police officers, that might change things. Did the defence try to explain why he continued.

I've just read this in the Manchester paper:

After one juror was discharged on Monday due to a pre-planned holiday, 11 jurors remain.

What if that was the one juror who would have cleared them.

Also, the judge has asked them to continue deliberating, but has now said he will accept a majority verdict from ten jurors.

you answered your own question

But the defence seem to be that the police officers broke procedure by silently grabbing the defendant from behind and he thought he was being assaulted.
I've only your paraphrase of it above, but it seems a weak argument looking at the CCTV footage; there is a considerable delay and inaction from the guy who was "grabbed" before he starts throwing punches.

If you've just head butted someone, then you're grabbed from behind and are "terrified for your life", you don't turn around, see that it's three police officers, then start a fight because you think they're gonna knife you on the spot. As an argument it would have been more believable if he'd immediately kicked/thrown backwards, turned with elbow at striking height, maybe thrown a fist then seen it's the police and not the big, ugly, knife wielding brother of the guy he just assaulted and stopped at that point with hands up rather than continuing to resist arrest

His adjacent mate was well aware of the police presence ahead of them even touching him; if he didn't say "look out, it's the rozzers" I'd think it very unusual. That he then chose to join the fight rather than subdue it diminishes the self defence argument further in my view

That's my take, as well.

It's interesting that the original offence - the alleged head butt in Starbucks, has't been pursued. I wonder if the CPS are holding it back.

Amazing that Tommy gets all the sympathy for laying someone out yet these people should be hung drawn and quartered.

No actual evidence about tommy or exactly what happened hence why people hanging back .
Manchester clear video evidence of the scum bags attacking people doing their job and an innocent family sitting having a coffee .
But then that doesnt suit your thought processes does it

It certainly sends mixed messages, though.
