Filey: Filey Brigg is one of the best places in the country for rock pooling. It also has a concrete path to get there (its actually the sewer discharge, but the outfall is further out). Very recommend you explore the Brigg, and if you're feeling a bit more adventurous, go around the end to get to the Emperor's Bath. Check tide times before going!
Pubs: Last time we camped at Filey country park we ate at the Star Inn. Based on that one visit, I would definitely recommend, as good food, service, and real ale.
We have also done Station pub. We've had mixed experiences there. Sometimes good, sometimes noisey.
Can't comment on traditional fish n chip shops in Filey as we haven't done it. Its the one place we don't do fish n chips as we go to the Filey Brigg Country Park, either camping or as a day trip (parking on the grass area nearer the brigg. There's a cafe for ice cream/ cake, but don't do fish & chips.
I try to time it so we do the beach in the morning, and the brigg at low tide in the afternoon, but that's how our kids are wired. (They have just decided they don't like beaches anymore, so it may be a last visit last year).
I once had the best day out ever, when I took the kids and my parents there, and we did the beach and brigg, and a Lancaster bomber flew overhead twice. To say it was a perfect day would be an understatement.
