Problems are - CKD 5, slight diabetic, they detected I'd had a mild stroke unnoticed by me, in the distant past, and a major oesophagus bleed, a few years ago, which saw me hospitalised. This past year or so, I have multiple times woken suddenly in the night, and hour or so after dropping off, with an over-whelming sense of panic, doom, feeling really poorly, but not being able to quite work in what way I felt ill - not being able to decide whether I wanted to lie down, get up, sit down, lay on the floor, go to the toilet. I have ended up getting up, and going and sitting out in the garden for an hour or two, until the feelings pass, then back to bed. Physically confused, but not mentally confused at all.

Other symptoms, perhaps connected, is my stamina is way down. I can feel just fine sat about doing not very much, if I try to tackle anything needing much effort, I have to do a few minutes, then sit and wait while I recover, before doing another few minutes. Walking, likewise - go 100yards, and need to stop, sit down to recover, then on a bit further.

It has all slowly worsened over the past five years, though I've not bothered the GP, because my symptoms have been so impossible to explain, and the only appointments I get are remote phone appointments.

We are just today, back from two weeks in the tourer caravan. During the two weeks, I had three such 'attacks', the last, just last night...

I was asleep at midnight, woke suddenly at 1:17am feeling absolutely terrible. Got up dressed, took a slow walk in the fresh-air, to the site toilet, felt a little better, went back to bed. I then got back up immediately, feeling even worse. It got to 3am and I decided to have Avril ring 111, and see if between us, we could attempt to explain the weird symptoms. I/we spent an age, just trying to do that, the operator, struggling with his script, but he eventually agreed to put me through to someone qualified.

The someone qualified, was a nurse at the local hospital, but by then I was nearly back to normal, so I was able to have a very long chat with her, about all my medical issues, and the meds I'd been prescribed for them. The day before, I'd come across an FB group, discussing the problems of statins, and one of the posters described having issues, very similar to me, both the waking in the night feeling like they were dying, and the complete lack of stamina, so towards the end of the chat, I mentioned it, and asked if my Atorvastatin, might be to blame for my ills. She said, that in her opinion they ought to be stopped, because they do cause lots of problems, and there are far better, safer drugs, for dealing with cholesterol.

When they started me on drugs, including the atorvastatin, some 7 years ago, I had some terrible reactions, to them. Before that, I had absolutely no problems, no issues. I am now almost convinced, the statins are the cause. 111 have recorded my call, and the details will be forwarded to my GP, so I can now maybe get a F2F, and a proper discussion. What are others opinions of statins?

I have no issues at all taking them, but that doesn't mean others won't have side effects.

I’m on Atorvastatin, 20mg, and I haven’t felt quite right since I’ve been on them, about 5/6 years. They make me ache like a bastard. I ain’t feeling quite right at the moment but just can’t pin it on anything and like you, I can’t quite describe it. Just 'icky'.

@Harry Bloomfield I feel for you Harry. I stopped working (for a living) at 60 due to a couple of TIA's (mini stroke) and that was 25yrs ago. Amongst other 'drugs' I take a small (5mg) statin (rosuvastatin) that keeps my blood fats well within limits. Before this particular statin, various docs tried me on several different types until this one suited my body. The others had horrid side effects from feeling nauseous to adverse skin reactions, but the rosuvastatin does its job without interfering with my daily life. I too am a T2 diabetic, but a mix of tablets keep me well withing limits and a usual review test on the HbA1c of 6.2% so we are all happy with that. As for sleep, I seem to manage reasonably well on around 3hrs nightly and then I'm awake with the radio in my earphones. If there is anything specific, I can help you with, drop me a PM and I'll reply ..okay?

At my last phone appointment, 3 monthly appointment, with the hospital, I asked if my CKD problem, might be the cause of my lack of stamina, and the answer was a no. I don't just feel 'icky' on these occasions, I feel incredibly poorly. This was the FB group, which I found earlier, with lots of people discussing statins - https://www.facebook.com/groups/1519748235299232.

I normally sleep the full 8 hours, without a problem, but I used to be able, when I needed to, skip a nights sleep, and simply work round the clock, before crashing. After last night's episode, and the discussion with the nurse, I decided not to take my usual 20mg atorvastatin this morning. Despite only managing 3 hours sleep, I was able to help Avril pack the caravan up, drive us home, and be quite busy for the rest of the day, without my usual problem of simply 'running out of steam' happening. I'll continue to omit it, until I've got and had an appointment with my GP, and see what they have to say.

I can’t go to sleep without reading until I’m tired. Normally 30-60 minutes will do it but I nearly always wake up around 3.30 and unless I’ve taken a sleeping tablet (over the counter, not prescription) I’ll read again until I drop off.

Current recommendations for adults, including those in their 70s, aim for a total cholesterol below 200 mg/dL and an LDL ("bad") cholesterol below 100 mg/dL, according to Healthline. In the 70s, a total cholesterol level of 300 mg/dL might have been considered normal, but this has been significantly revised.

Interestingly, we were all healthier in the 70s without packing up on medications.
My grandfather died at 94 having taken no medications at all in his life, apart from a short spell in hospital for kidney stones.

My 2 pennies (and that of many doctors off the records) if below 300, don't take anything.

Side effects of all medications are sometimes worse than the illness they're supposed to control.

I'm on rosuvestatin for cholestrol control.
Gives me the occasional leg cramps but this one does it the least so I don't want to change it.
I too wake up around 3 ish, although I take Magnesium also (something to keep the other 7 pills company in the evenings lol) that helps me sleep.

I/we try to watch a bit of TV. We set the TV to go off, but I'm deep in sleep within minutes.

I get them mildly, most nights, always in the feet - I've had to learn how to quickly avoid them getting too bad.

First statins I tried made my face swell and eyes sore and itchy. So second lot seemed ok but read so many worries about statin side effects ( from medical professionals) I stopped taking them .
Harry you may get panic attacks, or even sleep apnea which can have you wake suddenly gasping without any obvious reason .
Unexplained tiredness can be a result of spinal stenosis, my cervical stenosis leaves me tired very quickly , I need to rest for 30-40 mins for every 20 mins of activity .

Yes, panic attack sort of fits too. I've been struggling for the best words to describe how I feel, so thanks.

Monday morning, they will have the report of my call to 111, so I will be ringing my GP to arrange a F2F. I'm planning, just so their are no mistakes, or omitted bits, to type it all up, and print it, ready for the appointment, and just hand it over.

It sounds like are walking up in the middle of an anxiety attack. They are horrible and I wouldn’t wish them on anyone!

As above meditation can cause more issues than it cures. My Dad went it to hospital recently for a balance issue. While there they gave him a check over and halved his heart medication and took him off beta blockers.

His heart is now much better.

Maybe have a few days off your meds ? I don’t know if that’s sensible or practical though ?

They tried to put my dad on statins about 20 yrs ago, he asked why, and they said because he had reached 70
He refused, he is still riding his bike to the shops now. Has anyone watched statin nation?

I took my last one, on Friday, early days, but I'm already I think, feeling much better.

I have always just assumed, the GP's and pharmacists, were much more knowledgeable than me, and so accepted what ever they have suggested. I have also read, that come 60/70, they just automatically prescribe statins for everyone.

Indian tonic water is supposed to help with the cramps (if it has quinine in it) although drinking a glass of thatdisgusting stuffin the evening will have me up at 3am wanting a pee.
I usually get the cramp in my calves just as I'm about to get up, so I'm hobbling to work that day, the discomfort from it can last a couple of days.
