I have an LPG storage tank (1400 litres). This is & has been filled by Calor for 13 years, when moving into the property Calor actually sent a representative out to check on the location (I believe it was installed about 3 years before I moved into the property).
I am out of contract with Calor and have been checking prices with Avanti & Flogas. Both these companies are telling me my tank is too close to the garage, they say I need 3metres, i only have 1.5.

So the situation seems to be stay with Calor @£0.74p/l and not be accepted by the other companies @ £0.49 p/l.

How can rules be changed, that stop people changing a supplier.

This is just a whinge, but it would be nice to get feed back from others, that may have faced similar.

It used to be the case that other suppliers stipulate that you need to use a tank that they supply. If that's still the case, just build a new plinth a bit further away.

Only have 1.5 metres... exactly or can you fit a firewall (aka radiation wall) in-between?

https://www.liquidgasuk.org/uploads/DOC65F1825C7F50A.pdf has the Code of Practice from 2017 (whether that is when the distances were revised I know not).

Q. Is a garage a habitable building?
Q. Is a garage wall / can a garage wall be made into a suitable firewall?

Note in that pdf a tank can be sited close to a house wall in certain circumstances.

Mind, convincing a LPG supplier of how their Code of Practice is supposed to be interpreted if your view is different may be flogging a dead horse.

Consider a move to an air to water ASHP and get the grant while they remain available?

You can't wall in gas tanks, they have to be in an open area to allow any leakage to disperse.

I find it strange that a sited tank has to be at a minimum distance from a building, when my occasional retreat house is fed from 2 x 47Kg bottles chained to the side-rear of the property. A local LPG supplier arrives to change one withing a few days of receiving my phone call and he has never mentioned their closeness to the house.

There are rules for them. too - and they differ from the Bulk Tanks (and distances vary with size of said tank, smaller can be closer).

The pair of 47Kg bottles have been connected to the property for at least the past 25yrs and so far not a single peep from anyone. The local service guy does his checks, + appliance service and happily acknowledges his paid invoice. This pair of bottes are heavily chained to the building's outer wall as well as a locked heavy retainer band.

Perhaps the rules are akin to those where classic cars have do not have to conform to current regs, for instance lap belts and no headrests?

i.e. met the criteria of the time.

?

Where did I suggest walling it in?
Read the pdf I linked to for the LPG code of practice!
I didn't say that you said that, I said that you can't do it. When I had a bulk tank, it was just outside my garden on a bit of a wilderness, I had to keep the area free from tall grass and weeds.
BTW, wind your neck in.

Got to agree with Rodders. No-one else had mentioned walling the tank in, so why bring it up. And you quoted his post making it look like you had a problem with it.

Maybe re-think who needs to be winding necks in.

I had exactly the same in my last house, LPG tank was too close to the boundary so other suppliers wouldn't take it on, and of course this meant there was no way to negotiate a saving on the gas price.

Fixed the problem by switching to ASHP

What is this Google says ...heat pump????

i dont want heat pump

Yes, ASHP is Air Source Heat Pump. Cheaper to run, and you get rid of the big tank in the garden
