Secret base / hiding place under stairs

Kids watching too much YouTube with these YouTubers building secret rooms/bases in their houses.

Mine have been annoying me a lot lately to build them something under the stairs.

There's a small area underneath the bottom of the stairs that is sealed off where they want it built.

There's not a whole lot of space there but I'm going to have a go off it anyway. I'm limited enough with tools as I don't work in construction. I have a drill and can get my hands on a jigsaw.

I had a knock off that panel marked in red. It sounds like there's a stud at the centre.

I'm thinking off cutting out the green rectangle with the jigsaw and then adding a hinge (blue) at the top so that the door can flap open and closed.

Any thoughts on this? Would there be a better way to do this? Tips for a cleaner finish?

Box the stairs in. That’ll give them room to breathe at least!

Top-hinged door seems like an obvious way to trap fingers.
However you do this, you'll need to get a good finish on it as the kids will probably tire of it but you will still need to live with how it looks!
