Mandatory ID cards (Brit Card) to be announced tomorrow

To Harry, with respect, it is irrelevant what other countries do, we are Britain. We do not do what other countries do.

Just heard it on the LBC radio news they read out the ID card news then directly after it was the nursery hack -- and nobody batts an eyelid - makes a connection on data safety.
Don't get me started on nurseries. Bill Gates funded heroin crack houses.

You cant abolish cash I would have a dirty car and long hair
literally the only 2 things I use cash for Pete, barber and carwash. Oh and for gifting other people and the kids. But for the rest of actual life, no need for cash

Google AI (pulled from a number of sources) says this about the German experience with ID cards and immigration:

No, the implementation of ID cards has not reduced immigration into Germany. Germany's ID cards are primarily for German and EU citizens, and for non EU residents, ID cards are the standard plastic residence permits issued to non-EU citizens to facilitate legal residence and employment. The introduction of these modern ID documents serves to streamline the identity verification process and improve digital functionalities, rather than acting as a barrier to immigration.

Voluntary ID but not mandatory. The JLR etc experience shows that data cannot be protected by big private companies, so why assume the government can do it. It’s little more than the government attempting to create clear blue water with Re form on immigration. A MacSweeny inspired diversion from Kieth’s polling problems and Burnam’s headline grabbing antics

It would be great to have just 1 number, instead of NI number, Unique Tax Reference number, NHS number, etc etc etc.

But I suspect it wouldn’t replace all the others it would just be another number.

I wonder what the actual practical purpose of it would be

One single form of ID, that is universally accepted? So to commit ID theft, I just need to hack your digital ID and you have no way to prove who you are to recover it. There are obvious flaws.

According to Polls 50% of people support the idea. According to this thread it looks more like 10%.

Could not care less.
do you think ID theft is bad? Do you think people who are victims of ID theft have real problems recovering their ID? Do you think one single form of ID will make ID theft easier or harder? do you think that one single form of ID will make recovering your hacked ID easier or harder?
