Mandatory ID cards (Brit Card) to be announced tomorrow

do you think ID theft is bad? Do you think people who are victims of ID theft have real problems recovering their ID? Do you think one single form of ID will make ID theft easier or harder? do you think that one single form of ID will make recovering your hacked ID easier or harder?
You mean internet related devices and the like?

It won't change the way thieves steal identities etc - no. Same old same old there.

One single form of ID, that is universally accepted? So to commit ID theft, I just need to hack your digital ID and you have no way to prove who you are to recover it. There are obvious flaws.

According to Polls 50% of people support the idea. According to this thread it looks more like 10%.
There are real benefits. This forums is just filled with grumpy old men who hate the idea of things more modern than steam engines.

They are proposing an app that has your digital ID, that you can show someone to prove who you are.

Imagine you have paid off your mortgage and there are no 3rd party charges on your house. I have intel you are going on a 3 month cruise. I hack your Digital ID. I open a bank account in your name, I take control of all your accounts, pension, bank, etc. II put your house on the market, I use "your" to ID to instruct on the sale, I sell your house. You come home and someone else is living there.

what are you going to do?
The lawyer relied on your ID, the bank relied on your ID, the land register relied on your ID, your pension firm relied on your ID when you asked for a drawdown.

As someone who appears to work in IT, I'd expect you to be aware of the terms " separation of duty" or "defence in depth"?

I too couldn't care less or give a toss. I'm sat on the fence and very nonchalant about the matter, just as long as people VOTE LABOUR FOREVER!

And non-repudabilidy, availability, data quality, MFA and a whole load of other things.

This isn't simple, there are real advantages to both the users and the government for this system as well as risks. I don't know how well it stacks up, but we've been heading this way for decades.

Defence in depth doesn't really apply here as digital ID doesn't preclude it nor separation of duty either. You might be thinking about compatmentalisation.

I understand it applies to people of 'working age' so that's a relief for pensioners, but how will it work for sensible folk without a smart phone?

Can that not happen now? Without the new ID card ?
