Ceiling cracks

Hey everyone

I’m doing a full house refurb and one of the jobs on the list is to sort out the ceiling cracks. Most of the rooms have cracks going the full length of the board. Interestingly, not many cracks going the short length of the board.

I’m guessing they weren’t taped to up prior to plastering. It’s a 60’s build.

I’m thinking the best thing to do is rake the cracks out then filler followed by some mesh/tape before filling over the top. I’m guessing without the tape the cracks will just come back.

I’m screwing down the floors on the middle and top (dormer) which should hopefully firm up the joists and stop so much play.

What tape would you go for? I find the paper tape to be quite tricky to blend in. I always get bubbles despite soaking the tape first. I always end up over sanding it too. Is there some sort of ultra fine tape that would do the job but is easier to attach to the ceiling and fill?

Assume toupret filler is the go to?

Cheers

Scrape the surface back with a tungsten scraper.
Seal with Gardz.
Cut fiber fuse tape to fit in scraped channel.
Set tape in with toupret powder filler.
Sand.

Setting tape below original surface there is no bump. Fiber fuse tape will take a sanding unlike all the other tapes. Never let me down yet

Thanks Wayners. I’ve got some scrapers but not a tungsten one. I guess as long as the width of the tape is cut back it’ll be fine whatever I use.

Is it also worth driving some screws in along the joins where there are joists. I think they’re mostly nails holding it in which may cause some movement (and the occasional nail pop).

Any recommendations on which fiber fuse tape to go for? I’m sure not all brands are the same.

Cheers!

Any fiber fuse tape you can get..
One stop plastering shop I use.

If board won't sit on joints a few 10mm holes and a quick squirt of foam packs. It's the only way

Yeah. Spray foam packs the gap between board and joist.

Yeah correct tape on eBay
