My 87 year old father-in-law lives in Scotland and has agreed to some work to be done on his house. The quote is below. It is a 2 bedroom, 2 floor detached house. No scaffolding is involved. The amount seems very high and would like some feedback. At least some questions to query the quote. Unfortunately, he has already paid the deposit. We have searched companies house and located the builder and he is not listed as a trusted trader in Scotland. Reviews are mostly on his site and found a few negative reviews on a FB scammer group. I believe my Father in law has 10days to ask for his money returned but before we do that, we want to check on the maths. He did not get 3 quotes. Any help is very much appreciated.

dont know what scotland is like and if any access issues
seems high to me , but when i had this done on a bunglow was just before covid and prices have gone up since then
£8,000 is a lot of deposit

BUT how likely are you going to get the money back anyway - how did he pay , Credit Card, Debit card , cash, cheque , bank transfer

what price were the other 2 quotes ? and what was quoted

if a forum says £1000 and some one else says 20,000 who can you trust (noone knows really - but you may get a rough idea if members are in the same area and do that sort of work) when they have NOT seen the work
2 storey and no scaffold , I thought when i had work done years ago on a 2 story house scaffolding was required now

we had other work done on the roof, but that and replacing all the soffits, faciars , all guttering , felt support trays, new felt (as roof was comming off 8-10 tiles back for oter job) , downpipes (we had 4 ) and also fixing any rottern joist ends (which we found and paid as they found them) - under £3,000
no access isues - we had 4 quotes , some just wanted to put pvc over the rotten facias , this was remove and replace and clear all rubbish

we also had a lot of other work at the same on the roof, insulation, and a warm flat roof installed

The quotes were spring 2017

Seems very high to me but I am only DIY but they have said strip back to trusts -- a term I am not used too
They also say they are only stripping out rotten wood facia and just replacing those sections with more wood then they are going to cap that and the rest of the remaining wood. So they are not replacing the facia and soffit at all. No felt support trays - nothing - sounds like a rip off to me.

Rip off springs to mind. Or a job he doesn't really want to do but would if it meant he could have a month off work afterwards

That's a a price for whole new roof with tiles and felt isn’t it not just over boarding.

Rip off price for sure......heartless barstewards with no conscious at all...

That sounds awfully high and the deposit is huge compared to the total.

As a matter of interest, whose idea is it to do the work?

No scaffolding involved? What are they using, jetpacks?

Once he starts work he'll say, "oh it's trickier than we thought, we'll need scaffolding, that's another £6000 please"

Get the money back if you can, if not contact Trading Standards as a matter of urgency, before the company disappears with the money. That quote, on the face of it, is a complete rip-off, for the work involved.
