if you are up for it , drop a few of your iphone FULL Orginal images onto dropbox and share the link to those files here
maybe also comment on some why you like them - why you dont - how they maybe improved if you had a "proper" camera

I can have a play if you dont mind on say apple photos app just to see what results you may get and what size etc

Yes been looking on there myself, seem to offer a good selection and warranty with them, not worth buying new

Would a flash be necessary as an item to add, not sure I would use it or would I? Once again these are things I am unncertain of as a beginner.

Ideally you want a flash that can be angled, bounced or better setup remotely, for example on a tripod bouncing off a reflector.

1) upgrade the iPhone 16 max pro etc or newer - these take great pictures.
2) buy a decent DSLR used and some lenses - £5-10k worth of kit for £2K and know it will take absolutely any type of photography you want, from studio, to wildlife.
3) buy something that looks like 2 but isn't much more than 1.
4) get a pair meta glasses or similar and release its often the convenience of having them on your face that allows you to take great shots.

So would you say a canon 5d mk iv is still relevant today? I keep looking at it and wondering.

It can do everything that any professional or amateur photographer would want to do. For everything else you have the iPhone.

But if you are going to shoot in auto or P and not learn how to use the advanced features stick with the iPhone

I want to learn the camera to shoot as a hobby, I would consider learning it part of the process of learning, a bit like saillig

I am spending as much time as I can in fits and starts as I am looking at getting qualified in time for next summer, so not rushing into it with too much importance at the moment, probably take a week off work to get through it and then looking at the practical in spring

Day skipper to start with. We have a holiday planned in July to hire a yacht and spend the week sailing. I only need the day skipper. A friend of ours goes to Croatia each year.

Where are you renting?

You will likely need a radio license and “upgrade” your Dayskipper to ICC (just a form and a fee). Which is actually inferior, but recognised in the EU.

Croatia would not be my first choice in July. Pretty though it is.

I’d probably look at southern Ionian. Unless your friend is already qualified and you are just crew.
