Converting old heating control to socket

There should be a way of using this, assuming you are only going to use small loads.
It looks like there is a single back box behind.
If you get a double or even a triple CONVERTA socket (names vary), you should be able to have a flush socket that should cover most if not all of the hole in the tiling.

That was my first thought (and still is) but in OP

See pic. Got an old BG heating control.

Is it possible to convert this to a standard socket?

I guess I need back box to go in there first off all (I need a back box to screw the front plate onto?)

then be able to determine which is the permanent live there.....(can see neutral and earth np)

Trouble is the hole is an non-standard size.....

Nor sure if I'd be able to get a faceplate to cover the hole?

If this is a 1960's property; hold on to those 2 fixing screws as the box may be imperial.

Which was likely built with some other form of heating, then a boiler/heating system added later. That control, looks as if it is from the 1990, possibly when the central heating was fitted.

Reason I mentioned it is potentially black painted backbox which could predate the wiring

You will need to do some investigating to find where the existing cable originates, it wasn't uncommon for plumbers to simply spur from a ring without a fuse or even to use the lighting circuit.
scrub thisFor a start replace the controller and switch it on then isolate the circuits in the consumer unit until the controller goes offas we don't know what's on the other end of the red,yello,blue cable and could be a hazard.
Do you know where that is? is there a FCU near it? Possibly in the airing cupboard/where the hot water cylinder used to be.
