This is really sad, somebody has died putting up a Union flag

Apparently he was part of the City Service Firm, some form of football hooliganism connected to Bristol city -he had served time in prison for football hooliganism

I would imagine its quite easy for a ladder to slip when leaning on a lamp post

A very sad unnecessary loss of life. Awful

It makes me wonder how many people die or get seriously injured each year putting up christmas lights on their house

please be careful people dont take risks

Very sad to read that, I did warn people about this on this site. It is a dangerous occupation working on street lighting and very easy to lose your life if not wearing harness and safety equipment that we use. He would only have been at a few metres as well which just goes to show the dangers. Street lights can go over very easily as they are designed to collapse on impact.

I would have thought that it's more to do with a flat straight run of a ladder slipping off a round pole rather than the post falling over if a ladder is leaned up against it. Which is why the Victorian cast iron lamp posts have a cross bar for the ladder to lean on.

they are quite stable against lamp posts, we use them where access is restricted for our cherry pickers, it is a dangerous job and even we get some serious injurys from working on them.

The camera doesnt do justice to the heights we work at on them, If you look at my cherry picker booms in the shadow on the ground, I am at 14 metres at full stretch here manhandling huge heavy lights onto the top of the posts, no fun in the wind as you sway around all over the place, anything goes wrong at this height and you are instantly dead. This poor bloke would have been only a few metres above the ground and so sad for this to have happened.

Have you seen the cherry pickers working on musk starship they are about twice the height

A neighbour manages to hang their outside lights by means of an extendable decorators pole with a hook on the end. It seems to work.
The loss of a life is particularly sad when it’s complete avoidable. Councils up and down the country cannot use ladders under health and safety but spend thousands on cherry pickers to remove illegal flags.
