has not had an oil change for 2 years (9000 mile) and has miraculously just passed another MOT,, i had to fix some underbody rust, and the bloke that welded it back up for me (who is normally very positive about fixing stuff) tells me not a chance next year.

I want to run it for the next year (another 4000 mile) its a 1.6 hdi - should i bother spending £50 on an oil and filter change, or should I just plough on and keep my fingers crossed (I know these enginges can suffer from sludge)

I would check the condition of the oil on the dipstick and then decide. If it looks nasty then maybe.

If you're prepared to take the (fairly slim) risk of oil starvation I wouldn't spend the money.

If oil has been changed yearly, then this last lot lasting 2 years should be ok.

It won't do the engine any good but it should survive ok. Assuming no major rattles already etc

You won't know if it's sludge until you drain it.

But if it's been changed regularly before it should be ok

No promises mind
never missed a year, so it has had a change every 4 or 5k since i got it 14 years ago - only missed last year I never thought it would pass another test

Anyways - found 2 litres in the garage so have just ordered another 2 (£22) oil filter about a tenner?
may as well change it, peace of mind and all that
