They have a lease on Guantanamo Bay, had it for donkeys years. Like you, I read that the Americans sent an annual cheque for the lease and Fidel Castro never cashed a single one, had a draw full of 'em.
I've got a Che Guevara T shirt, on the rare occasions I wear it youngsters ask me who he is, they recognise the face but seem unaware of the backstory. I just tell them he was a socialist nut job who brought about the Cuban missile crisis after they 'won' the revolution and he worked in Government, till he got bored and went off to fight another revolution in Bolivia where they decided he was a nut job and shot him. Che's biggest asset is that he was extremely photogenic, probably as good looking as Highwayman.
Not sure what benefit Cuba would be to the US, it's pretty worthless. Alberta on the other hand?, they seem keen on breaking away from Canada and....?
