RCD tripping on a light circuit

Yes, neutral and live into the switch
In which case both the live and neutral can be disconnected at the switch – after making them safe with connectors etc – the power can be switched on and it will show if the fault is before or after the switch by the RCD tripping or not.

Ok, disconnected and made safe, power on and still trips. I assume this points to the cable between the switch and breaker being the issue?

The OP is calling it an RCD which is tripping, but he perhaps may not know the difference - it could be an RCD, MCB, or RCBO. Could the OP help us out with a photo, of the item which is tripping?

Evening Gentlemen,

Apologies if I may have caused any confusion. Below is the panel in question. Note the labelling is misaligned and needs to move 1 to the left, I believe 'lights #4' is the circuit with the issue not 'Bath lights'.

When that breaker is closed, the breaker labelled RCD with the yellow button trips.
If you separate (safely) the 3 browns and 3 blues it still trips?
I am confused by this one. The switch only has 1 brown and one blue. picture below. the other is a separate two way circuit.

You don't have neutral at the switch, my suggestion doesn't help you at all.

Any further tests will require accessing the wiring above the ceiling but I fear it's time I suggest getting someone in.

Useful information above.

Have you heard or seen and mice or rats?
no, but we are in a basement with a large communal garden behind and I think a void under the floor which increases towards the rear, so I think it is safe to assume they are about, rats that is. You suspect rodent damage under the floor between switch and breaker?

No problem and thanks for your input.
I think you are probably right though on getting some one in!

Does each light have one cable going into that connector box like the one in your picture or do some have two? If some have two you could start disconnecting one of them to see if some lights can be turned on.

I think I am correct, that those Wylex MCB's, only isolate the live, in which case, if the RCD trips, only when that MCB is turned on, irrespective of whether the light switch for the circuit is on, or off - that suggest to me, there is leakage between L and E, before the switch.

For the OP - As a final check, if you locate and isolate the L, which feeds to switch for the six lights, safely isolate it with a connector, switch back on and the RCD still trips - It suggests the fault is on the cable between the consumer unit, and the switch.

If the cable goes up, to the ceiling, before making it's way across to the switch, then the chances are, that a floor nail or similar has damaged the cable.
