This fella on YouTube, Jeremy Bares, shows you how to play all the guitar parts to tons of Stones songs...

I recall you saying that you was a music student once. What do you play as I play guitar, bass and the bugle. One thing I never mastered was reading and writing music, I understand musical theory circle of 5ths etc, scales and everything. However I play off tabs and by ear only.

Ha ha no, not a music student, but I would love to be. I can play a bit of guitar, recorder, violin and cello, all self-taught or picked up from friends. You don't have to be able to read music - most of our rock idols don't. Learning scales is vital. I think the cello is the greatest musical instrument of them all. Cello music is written on the bass clef, and I find it easier to follow than guitar music.

bass guitar is also written on the bass clef, that still confuses me. I use tabs and by ear and can play anything based on this. I have tried so many times to learn to read music, I think I have it then see a sheet of music and I just look for the tabs again.

When the Stones were riding high with 'Satisfaction', Ron Wood was in one of his first groups: The Birds (not to be confused with the Byrds from the USA). Ronnie was know as 'The guitarist who looks like cleopatra'.

Here they are, in an excerpt from a film called The Deadly Bees ( there was a trend in the 1960s for films to feature a live pop group, but that's another story)...

Start off with something extremely simple, and play it extremely slowly. On the cello, they start you off with things like 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'!

I've got music O'Level. Learning to read music is probably easiest with a keyboard because you can see the notes.

I've got two guitars and I can't play either of them.

I've just been reading that guitar music is a lot harder to read than piano music.

Piano music is linear and obvious because you can see all the notes right in front of you.
As you know, I am a true genius and was a child prodigy but sheet music just doesnt compute with me, that's how hard it is.
