Do you know the make and or model of the toilet or the flush valve? Anything printed on the flush valve?

As others have said they usually have a release button on them. This is the closest I can find.

Failing that you can usually split the 2 halves (it hinges along the top) & wiggle it off. There may be a small screw in the hole
