'Substitute' was probably the first Who song I heard, and I followed them from then on up until Moonie's death, they rarely let me down!
The line 'I look all white but my dad was black' was changed for the American release of the 'Substitute' single to 'I try to walk forward but my feet walk back'. This was the mid-60s, and the lyric was thought too controversial for the US market. It meant nothing here at the time - the racism industry hadn't started yet.

Saw The Who 2006 at Ashton Gate, Bristol City ground. Perfect summer's evening, few pints in a local boozer then the concert - standing on the hallowed turf (covered up for the eveving), close to the stage. Daltrey wanders on stage to start the concert swigging a mug of tea. Well, I think it was tea. A night to remember.

Can't say I'm huge fan of this bloke, but me and a friend were talking last night about Neil Diamond and some of the unlikely songs he wrote such as 'girl you'll be a woman soon' which I first heard on Pulp Fiction when the conversation turned to Glen Campbell and this particular song. Unusual structure, a constant stream of lyric, almost Dylanesque.

I put 'Dance Little Sister' by the Stones on the other day - their guitarist at the time was Mick Taylor. There's a Youtube channel called 'Happyhotstar', where an anonymous guitarist plays along with various Stones songs. He is superb, obviously a professional and there is much speculation as to his identity. Many think that he is Wayne Perkins, an American guitarist who did some sessions with the Stones in the period between Taylor leaving and Ron Wood joining, when they were auditioning. Here he is, watch the triple string bends and whammy bar use.

Sadly, as I was thinking of this I looked up Wayne Perkins, and it turns out he died only last week aged 74.

(It has not been confirmed that it is him in the Happyhotstar videos).
