'Substitute' was probably the first Who song I heard, and I followed them from then on up until Moonie's death, they rarely let me down!
The line 'I look all white but my dad was black' was changed for the American release of the 'Substitute' single to 'I try to walk forward but my feet walk back'. This was the mid-60s, and the lyric was thought too controversial for the US market. It meant nothing here at the time - the racism industry hadn't started yet.
