HI all,

I'm laying a (~10m) cable for an outdoor sauna. The recommended cable size is 6mm2 (heater is 6kW). Is there any reason why I can't use 10mm2?

I have some left over from another job, and it would save me £40

Thanks

It depends on what sort and the instalation method and whether you are competant

3 core 10mm2 double insulated, direct from CU via 20A MCB, single phase, and I wouldn't be asking the question if I was competent.

10mm² can be used instead of 6mm², the only possible problem is that due to being significantly larger the 10mm² may not fit into the terminals of whatever it is being connected to.

6mm² is probably oversized for a 6kW load over 10 metres distance.

Don't mess with electrics then.

Would you rather that he didn't ask?

Sorry not a slight on you. The OP has asked a valid question. He/she might be doing the ground work before an electrician turns up... and yes, I accept that your retort might be that he should ask the electrician. Regardless, surely it is better that people ask? And again, yeah, I get your point about people not being competent.

It sounds like we're 'laying' twin and earth across the garden, which sounds dodgy. What is the actual route and how is it fixed and is it really twin and earth?

Post # 3 outlines what I suspect is SWA “ left over from another job” which does beg a question about what the OP is doing day to day and why such a basic question
