The wayward Odds posted Plastic Bertrand recently and it made me think 'what other Belgian pop stars were there?'.

Jacques Brel of course! Histrionic and spellbinding to watch, his songs were covered by many of the more arty 60s and 70s pop stars.

Some musicians’ greatest songs arrive after their fame and careers have become well established. Jumpin’ Jack Flash for the Stones, Half the World Away from Oasis and this one:

I recall coming home as a teenager, flicking on 'Whistle Test' and seeing The Sensational Alex Harvey band for the first time, they performed Faith Healer and Next. Next blew me away, Years later I saw Bowie on TV do a song called Amsterdam, same reaction. It was some years later again I discovered both songs were written by Jacques Brel.
Most of Brel's albums were in French language although I've just read that he did an English language album in 1955.

One of my favourite albums of all time was 'Scott Walker sings Jacque Brel', amazingly, even if you've never heard of Brel, you'll know almost every song on this album, he was one of the major musical influences of our time, and all from the Paris cafe culture of the 50's.
