correct, it is when scaffolding was used when they were made from wood, the putlog was the short section of scaffold that ties the main poles to the building, they would make a hole in the side of the building that the pole would fit into. The term was "put log in the hole" so hence the name putlog.

Not at all. A footprint is the smaller and weaker version of the Stilson pipe wrench. The tool in question is an early adjustable spanner used for nuts mainly for British rail and steam engineering. and not a pipe wrench. I only deal in facts.
