Remove pillar

Hi, have got some mixed advice from our architect and builders about removing or making this supporting pillar smaller.
Is it possible to do so?
It really protrudes out into the room and affects how we can put a hallway in.

Most things are possible if you have deep enough pockets.

Should certainly be possible to replace what is probably a masonry pier with a steel column to support what appears to be a beam supporting something above. Said beam may not then be long enough so may need repacing.

We can't be specific without a full picture and that's what you employ an SE for.
