my guess is the only reason its held is that its a 15-20 year old tank (becoz no foam insulation). Back then they generally made the tanks with a thicker grade of copper.

Have also done this to a cylinder unwittingly when decommissioning a system. Cut the vent to loft and put speedfit on for some reason I can't remember . Was downstairs when I heard this groaning noise and ran upstairs like a bat out of hell. The pipe cutter quickly relieved the situation and no damage done. The owner was around and we both had a laugh at it.
