Hi all,
wonder if you can help me.
I live in a new build (Dec 2006) and for the last few months the kitchen door keeps opening by itself when pushed to.

Not when its closed fully, it doesn't unclick and open, it's only when it's pushed to.
It opens quite quickly and is sooo annoying!

Anyone have any ideas? is it just cos the building is settling?
The hinges are the thick new type ones (sorry Im no expert and don't know what they're called!)

Any help on how to rectify this would be welcome.

Thank you

Might be hinge-bound - where the edge of the door at the hinge side is hitting the frame which in turn tries to push the door open. Check for a gap between door and frame

Thanks John and Woody.

Does that require removing them completely, drilling new holes and re positioning them?

you will have to take off at least one, possibly more, and reposition.

check that the prob is not due to thick layers of paint on door and frame or some kind of draught-excluder.

does the door bark or spring to any specific point

if the door is stiff only on the last few inches is can be hinge bound or binding on the door stop for example
if it makes a noise or "springs" to a specific point it can be out of line hinges causing strain

if its free moving and has reached a specific point on the arc it can be gravity

you realy need to find out the correct symptom to find out the cure

Hi there,
Thanks for your reply.
No springing or noise, it just swings freely open til it's wide open as far as it can go.

I think the gravity thing may be right, do you know how to fix that problem please?

cheers

if fully open isnt around 90 degrees then it aint gravity

do you have a decent spirit level!!!!

if not do youi have a length of thick cotton or thin string six foot long with 2 identical nuts one on each end
knock a 2 inch nail into the centre of the archatrave on the hinge side [nail must be horizontal] with an inch sticking out

place the nut over the nail make shure the bottom nut is at least 1mm away from the archatrave

if the bottom nut is farther away from the frame than the top nut then gravity could be at work

same applies if the top hinge is farther out than the bottom

hi big all,
well it comes open to 90 degrees yes.

i have a spirit level do i just put it on top when open?

sorry, diy not my strong point... obviously!

shut the door fully

place the spirit level on the side of the door just by the hinges verticaly :D

you should now have a bubble at the top end off the spirit showing the level if not flip it round ;)

Hi Big,
Done that and yes the bubble goes over to the left slightly.
what shall I do next?

thanks so much

you move the level untill the bubble is central then tell me
[A] the distance the end of the level is from the door and
length of the level

then you rotate the level 180 deg so you can read the same bubble and repeat [A] above

a) is literally couple millimetres
b) 23cm

when I rotate, its pretty much the same.

12 to18mm not a lot realy the door would have to be very free moving to react

try loosening all the hinge screws one turn on the bottom hinge and see what happens!!!
