Looking to install a socket in the hall for the phone. Is it feasible to run a single 2.5mm twin and earth to it from a 15amp MCB or would it need to be added to the existing ring? Thanks

Do you mean a 16A MCB or a 15A Fuse wire?

Bit of an overkill running a dedicated radial back to the CU just for a new socket for the phone! Allthough, it depends where the socket is is relation to your CU.

Can you not just spur off a nearby socket outlet?

You could connect the supply for the socket to the 32A MCB that supplies the ring main, its electrically the same as a spur (same rules apply) from a socket outlet on the ring, but its not good practice IMO.

Why do you think it's not good practice? As you say it's perfectly acceptable and in this case it's probably the best solution.

That's a new circuit so it would be notifiable. A spur an extension so it's not.

Or even a 15A MCB!

Yes, they do exist...

The older BS3871 MCB's

This is the best I could manage at short notice

Cheers guys. As there are no spares in the box i was going to upgrade the shower box from a single to 3 way and run the socket from this. Not not space to do anything else as the meter is planted right in the middle of everything else (too much hassle to get it moved IMO). No sockets near the front dorr and would mean lifting the laminate in the living room  Never really thought of running a spur from the current ring MCB - this would be the solution with the least hassle! Cheers again.
