Basically it will help you to become a member of a self certification scheme. You will need to ask the various schemes what else they require for you to become a member, unless you are wanting to use LABC for every notifiable works which will cost £££££s

ive just done a consumer unit for the niceic to come out and inspect it to become registered. they should be out within the week, from that stage how would you go about work, word of mouth or do you get put on their website of local sparkys?

Ok - you get your first call. Somebody has a problem where their RCD keeps tripping. How would you go about it?

firstly i would probably test the rcd to see if there was a fault with the rcd its self, if that was ok then i would test the circuits that are protect by it and see if there are any faults on them.

What sort of fault would you be looking for on the circuits?

Sorry if it seems like school!!
You could do IR test, but wouldn't it be worthwhile disconnecting all the current using equipment first?

yes i suppose it would be but they would be disconnected before i would do the test anyway. i know what you mean tho, it could be one of the appliances causing the fault

And not to mention that the client's new computer probably wouldn't like 500v up it!

Anyhow, you have unplugged everything, switched off the water heater, removed lamps, and even found the tv aerial booster in the loft.

Talk us through how you carry out your IR test
