accidently came upon this site and find it rather worring that people are telling unqualified members of the public to try and fix their own boilers :!: There are lots of engineers out there who do not rip people off such as myself but under no circumstance would I advise anyone to try and fix their own no matter how skint they may be.I just pray I am not living next door to some numpty who has decided to try and repair their own boiler god help us all :!:

So how are these people going to recognise those good honest engineers out there ,and please don`t say by the corgi badge. If you take the trouble to read what actually happens is people are pointed in the right direction but told not to touch gas side or case seals

ok I know what you mean about finding an engineer but the last time I checked a thermocouple is connected to the gas valve and is an inherent safety feature of the boiler, and the post I was reading someone was advising a clearly unqualified person on how to swap their own.

Ok say changing a t/couple on wall mounted baxi 511 etc no overheat stat no need to break any seal 2 nuts how is this going to make a boiler dangerous, Or any straight forward similar job .

I suggest you check your regulations a boiler is classed as a gas fitting not a gas appliance and anyone not qualified is NOT allowed to work on a gas fitting. I was simply making a point as a corgi registered engineer that unqualified persons should not work on any gas fittings, and I don't fit baxi boilers as they are cheap crap. I can't remember what listing it was as I was just flicking through out of interest.

so aside from the fact a thermocouple is generally inside the combustion case what could a reasonable diyer do to screw that job up?

if it isnt fitted correcty it wont work at all. hmmm dangerous.

it is fitted correctly it will work properly. hmmm dangerous.

any moron can remove a combustion case and check the seal isnt buggered before they put it back on and any moron can use an fga. its not really a difficult job is it?

Yeah you know what your talking about the baxi 500 series came out about 78 to about 85 and still going strong about best boiler ever made.
And i suggest you check the regs a householder can work on his OWN appliance it is a matter of being competent and there is no one out there to say they are incompetent

Yoy keep refering to a boiler as an appliance, a boiler is not an appliance I suggest you refer to essential gas safety 4th edition.A boiler is a gas fitting it does not matter what you say there is no escaping the fact non-competant persons are not permitted to work on gas fittings.I know this to be true as I am an inspector for corgi, and have been for many years. Goodbye

yeah sure you are.

to be fair you sound like the type who is a corgi inspector.

who says they are not competent? you haven't "inspected" them.

You do not need to be corgi reg only need to be competent e.g. if you hold a a.c.s. and not corgi reg you can work on the boiler as long as you don't lie and say your registered.
I begrudgingly pay my corgi(glorified union) as all the think about is £££
They don't give us anything for our money

Suggest you look in the gas regs and see what it says. I have edition 4 so give me a page number.
And what is a corgi inspector doing fitting boilers in there spare time is 30k a year for part time job not enough
