OK, so Ideal combi boilers are rubbish....

So, my Ideal ISAR has gone again, with a fault code suggesting the PCB. Its a little under a year since the last PCB was changed, so I'll be buggered if I should have to pay again.

Anyway, after my 3rd new PCB in 5 years I know its time to get a new boiler before next winter. Is it likely to have much scrap value? Any suggestions as to "best" makes?

Not much scrap value!

The PCBs are not very reliable but you have been rather unlucky! They usually last at least two years on average, sometimes three.

many are killed by a water leak from the AAV which is conveniently situated to damage the display pcb connection which usually blows the main pcb as its not protected against overload.

That would have needed a 20p PTC resistor and woulf have halved the number of pcbs they sell !!!

the old ideal classic is brill, all of um since are rubbish! surprised ya ant had any leaks tho..
ya deff gonna replace it? i think they've modified the pcb now. the new1 cums in a orange box but i dnt no how they've modified it

Well, they cant find anyone to come out until Sunday, so I will let you know then.

So, chilly weekend, with no heating or hot water! Lucky I decided to keep the crappy electric shower as well as my nice new mixer.

Anyone know the law and how it affects my situation - can't I resonably expect a major component to last more than a year? £180 I had to pay them on the phone before they'd even book me in.

who's it booked in with? is it the same company? if its the same fault and no other component has took the pcb out then ya may not have to pay but u'll prob hav to kick up a fuss so they wnt charge ya

Booked direct to Ideal help line. last time it was an Ideal van and man that turned up.

Send em a bill for the parts plus loss of earning waiting in for the engineeer, plus frezzing your nuts off etc, say £1000.00

Then take em to the small claims Court under the sale of goods act if they don't pay

Had this same conversation with Ideal service manager on behalf of a customer. He told me that, as well as the call centre did, that they only warrant their fixes for 30 days

It will be interseting to find out in your case

I have pcbs' go on these twice in a year, but I replaced the faulty one FOC as I always give 12 months warranty on such an item.

Is it an older M30100? They were the worst

and indeed, today i have water running, well, dripping, out onto the floor. No wonder it is tripping.

Well, today they came out and did the following:

replaced the diverter valve as it was sticking and had lead to blown rubber seals under the heat exchanger (so, fixing the leak)

replaced the PCB black box, which still showed an error on the panel indicating a pcb fault.

then he noticed the fan was wobbling on its mount and he reckoned it was faulty. luckily he had one in the van so changed it over. pcb still showing a fault.

he came to the conclusion that the faulty fan had blown the new pcb, and he now had neither pcb or fan in the van.

So, he's gone again and we still are without a working boiler. Maybe within a couple of days - who knows. Ho hum.
