OK, so Ideal combi boilers are rubbish....

I suppose that if I was to put my mercenary head on, then I would say that the Ideal combis are brilliant.. Lots of faults and lots of these little things out there.

My buddy has an Isar, he bought it 'cos it was cheap, had a good name (LOL) and it would fit nicely in the cupboard over the bath, had it installed by a spurious gas man for pound notes, after I refused to fit it over the bath... Perhaps over the bath is the best place for it.. At least he knows that it wont flood him

Well, the saga continues. After a whole 4 months of error-free boilering, today we get another failure, namely a fault code "Lb" or possibly "L6". Not even listed in the book, that one. Anyway I switched it off and then on and it worked. Spoke to Warmsure and they want to charge 210 squids to come out in a few days time.

How best to source a new boiler? Having read the list of good and bad ones, what is the best way to get one - do a google and get in online?

Although you may appear to save money buying it yourself online, you will not usually get a warranty on it from your installer. So you will have to deal with the manufacturer direct.

You may also find it hard to find an installer to fit it.

For how little extra it would cost you I would find a good, reputable and highly recommended installer to supply and fit it.

The prices I supply boilers at do not amount to much more than about £50 more than web prices usually. Ask yourself, after all your hassles, is it worth it?

so an installer will provide a warranty that is longer than that of the boiler manufacturer?

Yep. WB,Vallaint and I believe Viessman approved installers all offer extended warranties as standard.

WB boilers come with a two year manufacturer warranty out of the box however an approved installer can offer you three year or five year warranties, depending on the type of approved installer you employ.

For example,I'm currently offering five years warranty and four years servicing from WB on the Greenstar range until the end of August.

Cheers.

I wasn't meaning the installer would necessarily offer a longer warranty than the manufacturers, but that if you supplied it yourself and a fault occured you would either have to call the manufacturers out yourself, risking whether it was actually a boiler fault, with the chance that if it wasn't you could get hit with a call out charge, or paying your installer a call out to attend before contacting the manufacturers.

The mark up we put on boilers, in my case anyway, is to cover the chance and cost, that I may get called out if a fault develops.

As Tony says, some installers can give extended warranty's for no extra charge, I do on Vaillants and Glow Worms. Mine all get a 3 year full manufacturers warranty.

well, had a quote today to replace the ISAR with a Worcester-Bosch jobbie, power flush, new room stat, an extra 2 years warranty over the 3 the manuf. gives, all for £2,200. So, after a few more quotes, will get it sorted before the autumn (hopefully)

It was flashing L and then 6 (or lower case b?) which is not mentioned in the blurb for it. I switched it off then on again and it was fine. Not happened today, so maybe it'll hold until I get a new boiler.

the lower case "b" points to a reset button fault, perhaps its stuck, switching off and on again may have cured it.
