Idiot guide to back boilers needed pls!

Waterworks you do not know the regs and a fire gaurd and rad cover is completely different . Suggest you phone corgi tomorow and just ask them. This is so feking basic

I don't think that I've ever seen such a load of rubbish spouted by one or two people here who clearly haven't a clue what they are talking about and are possibly giving advice which could contribute to a Carbon monoxide incident.

I'll put it quite simply :-

DON'T put any sort of cover over your fire front ventilated or not!

DON'T paint your fire front like so many idiots also do!

You have an unattractive old fashioned fire front in a rented house, Tough luck, DON'T MESS WITH IT!

If it's any consolation all local authorities are having to replace all these appliances within the next 4 years so you will have a nice shiny new boiler gratis courtesy of the taxpayer within that time schedule if you remain in subsidised council accommodation.

The rest of will just have to stick with our old boilers while we work hard to pay for your new one.

Whilst I thank you for taking the time to respond in relation to my question, I would like to point out that I did not come here for a personal attack based on your assumption of me, based on the sole information that I gave of me being a 30 year old female with a child in a council property.

I am a taxpayer just like anyone else, just because I live in a council property and have (actually 2 children) does not mean that I do not work. In fact, to enlighten you, I have two jobs, one as a rehabilitation officer for the prison service working in a Cat A prison and my second role is for the police service. So, not only do I pay tax, I pay it twice over and at the higher rate and not only do I work, but I am a classified 'Key Worker' in two extremely important and prestigious roles which involve providing a positive contribution back into the community.

There are reasons as to why I have just found myself in the predicament of being in 'subsidised council accommodation' as you put it, but quite frankly, its none of your business, this is a DIY forum, not a Dr Miriam Stoppard one.

You so obviously have a 'chip' on your shoulder for whatever reason however, may I suggest that in future you should keep to what you know and advise accordingly. Making ignorant personal assumptions and attacks based on very limited information on an individual makes you look an ass.

I am sure you and others are experts in your own fields and hence I take the information provided seriously and on board as such, perhaps you should leave the profiling and judgement of individuals to experts such as myself.

After all, this is a DIY forum is it not....

seen plenty of bbu's with a cage round them, not pretty but it stops the nippers getting about it.

wasnt that in that distant universe called (when common sense ruled) far far away,
known as a fire guard?

:? :?

call it what you like captain pedant, it gets the job done no matter what its name is.

1) We're all key workers luv, everybody does a job for a reason. By the way self praise is no praise (Prestigious and police ....LOL)

2) You don't pay tax twice over, you pay income tax on your earnings once however many jobs that you do.

3) My point still stands, if you are still living in subsidised council accomodation you should recieve a new boiler gratis within 4 years even though you say that you earn so much that you pay 40% on part of your earnings.

Good to see that you have taken heed of the advice of some of those who have advised not to tamper with fire covers (other than traditional wire guards) over the other idiots who were recommending modified radiator covers.

Hi,

I have just moved into a property which has a Glowworm 45 back boiler flued via the chimney and as I have never ever had one myself, just need some advice and reassurance as to how safe they are as I am always weiry re carbon monoxide etc.

The boiler has been regularly serviced (as this is a council property) and I had a service engineer from AFR come to do a moving in safety inspection last week. As the gas fire itself is so unsightly, I asked if it was possible to take this off and cap it so I could put a radiator type cover or something a bit more appealing to the eye but he advised me that I couldnt as the back boiler was directly connected to the gas fire and if I took this off, the fumes would go into the room? (right, I'm a 30 year old female and I haven't got a clue about these boilers).

I would really prefer to be able to 'hide' the gas fire (apart from the obvious ugly feature it is), I have a 10 month old baby who happens to be very attracted to sticking his fingers in the gas fire and playing with the knobs underneath.

Can anyone give me any advice or information?

I'd rather the engineer had condemned it for me but he didn't even have the courtesy to show me how it works!

Also - there is not much power to the shower, in fact, when you lift the shower head up it just dribbles, any advice? the bathroom is downstairs and shower is via mixer taps.

Thanks! Eva
hello eva im a gas engineer and back boilers are vw s
there build to last if well maintained can be the best boiler money can buy.there very easy to use just turn it off and on.and for the shower get a booster fitted and that sort out the dribbling into some action.

Trundletrucks I have to praise myself coz nobody else will! lol. Re the police comment, I do work within the police service but not frontline, I counsel young victims of sexual abuse so to me I feel my role is as prestigious as they come and I'm privileged to do the work I do. Yep, there I go, self praise again.... 8)

4 years is a long time to wait for a nice shiny new one gratis (as you put it) as I'd like to buy the council house, guess you're gonna have a go at me for not only being in subsidised accommodation but, by taking advantage of the huge discount available while others struggle to get on the ladder..... Well, to be honest, if it benefits me I couldn't give a toss and its nice to see our system helping one of our own non benefit scroungers for a change ( omg did i just open a whole can of worms with that comment)

Anyway enough about my personal life! No I won't be an idiot and use a rad cover, although I'd like to not have to look at the hideous thing, I kinda like being alive....

Thanks for all the advice here. I have another question and please don't shoot me down if its a stupid one as I don't have a clue about bbu's and I sure as hell won't pretend to!

With what I have left after my reasonable sudsidised rent, my 40% tax, my childcare costs which would pay a bloody £200k mortgage, my ridiculous petrol costs which seem to go up a penny or two at my local fill up every day between going to work and coming home , the stupid hikes in energy and food costs and even the rise in costs of wiping my butt with toilet roll....... I have a little left over and wondered if its possible to change the actual gas fire part (if they do new better looking 'shiny' nice ones) and if so, how much would I be looking at? Or, if you cant just buy the front part, how much would it cost to replace the whole bbu with a new one? I take it its gotta be cheaper then buying a combi and having to re pipe the whole house?

Just as you thought life could get no worse...Trundle Tricks shows up to fix your heating

Eva do you wear a uniform. NO NO .
What i meant to say is if you have a baxi backboiler then yes it is more than likely you could change the firefront but there is a limited choice of about 7 and half decent fronts are around £500..

Changing to another back boiler is a hard one do to the current regs back boilers need to hit a points total to be changed like for like and are not that cheap as such.

So if you where changing it would need boiler moving to somewhere else in the building, not necassarily an outside wall as flue systems are very adaptable nowadays.

could have been tony at the door. :o

LOL He'd have found the fault within 5 seconds of getting there.. and if he was having a good day, he'd have found the fault 5 seconds before he got there... It'll have been a sensor that none of the other 300 so called engineers knew about and he'd have charged tuppence h'apenny :D :D

As already mentioned unfortunately you can only choose from a limited number of firefronts and I would think that on that boiler none of them would look much better.

Also it wouldn't help your original problem regarding your child and a naked flame.

Why not enquire of the council if they have any idea when the BBU is to be changed in your property, and I'd advise not mentioning any intentions of taking up a right to buy until it's in.

I'll put a few hours overtime in so that the council might be able to bring the replacement forward, let them know, it might help.

no, the customer would have slit their wrists long before tony got the chance to charge them.
