Referring to the BS and IEE regulation that says the exposed connections need to be insulated (IEE 4.4.3 - 526) like with a choc box, does this apply to low voltage connections? for instance the connection of a 12V spot light?

If fed from a SELV source in certain locations I don't believe they need to be, I'm thinking of those lights which comprise of a transformer and 2 parallel metal bars which the lamps clamp to along their length.

You're thinking of bare conductors, particularly those referred to in 559.11.5.3, whereas enclosures for terminations and joints are covered by 526.5, with no specific exemption for ELV.

So how do they get away with those type of lights? I didn't think the terminations are housed in any enclosures, just bare metal like this: clicky. Manufacturers instructions?

well it will stop current leaking to earth, of course that doesn't make it a good idea ;)

Tongue in cheek indeed, and a little naughty of me considering this is a forum populated by quite a few diy'ers.

I've got a 110v site transformer with a tap in the centre. Left it open once...

Lets just say the decorator was not amused, it was all over the shop!
