£468 for earth bonding which consists of about 0.5m of earth cable coming from the consumer unit and at the moment not connected to anything, i assume it is going to be connectedto the water main. Now i wouldn't dream of touching the house electrics, i would rather pay an electrician and know the job is done correctly but £468 does seem a bit exsessive, i am sure the builder is adding his premium which is business i suppose but it just seems way over the top, what do you think, i would appreciate your opinions. Thanks Keith. great site btw, glad i found it

Are you sure there is nothing else involved?

It does seem expensive if that really is all that is being carried out.

Bl00dy hell!!!!! If that is all he is doing, and the water main is only half a meter away, shouldnt really be any more than £50 max. 1 hr labour including his travel time (unless he is coming from australia :? ).

I would definitly not pay it.

thank you for the very quick replies, we are near the end of an extension and have had lots of new sockets and lights etc and on the bill of quantities from the builder all the prices are broken down so i know how much each socket etc is costing me and thats how the cost of the bonding jumped of the page at me. It is just one lenth of earth cable from the comsumer unit, there is already two others going to the gas main and anotrher pipe but these have not been touched so it's just one new cable................i thought it sounded a bit steep

The thing that bothers me is that this should have been THE very first job.

And the reason is...?

I find it very odd that:

a: They should be charging you that amount of money for a 0.5m MEB

b: They didn't do it first

c: It isn't connected

What's the "other pipe" you mention and why has it had an MEB attached to it?

I work for a company that is 'ahem... nationwide - yeah right' and we have a menu pricing guide that we show to clients in their homes. Now, because of our setup we charge way too much, and in our book the price for, and I quote:

'MAIN BONDING ONLY' is £299.81, or £254 .40 if we're doing other stuff there as well.

This breaks down as:

2hrs labour
2m 16.0 g&y
25m 10.0 g&y
3 ec15 clamps
1 miscellaneous part
1 surcharge

Congratulations on finding someone who's better at daylight robbery than we are.

But being serious, the main bonding is always one of the first things to be installed. If, for any reason, it cant be installed because your waiting for first fixing or something then temporary bonding should be put in anyway. If he's leaving your home with this disconnected then he could be held accountable. We leave 'at risk notices' should clients refuse our advise, just to cover our asses.

just had another look and the original earth bondings are 1 to the gas m ain and 1 to the electric main coming up from the ground before the consumer unit, all 3 earth bonding cables go to a connection block on the board and then into the commsumer unit.
Thanks for your replies i really appreciate it, of to bed now, up at 4 :( (postie)

25m of 10mm² :?:

Anyway - at Screwfix list prices that's less than £25 for the materials, plus whatever the "miscellaneous part" is.

So over £100/hr for labour.

Gissajob.

I would think the earth tail hanging is ready for the DNO to connect, and there is actually other main eq bonding cables already installed and connected to gas/water and any other service required.

The price may possibly also include supp bonding? And how about the consumer unit - Is that being changed as part of the job?
