This is the RCD in my CU. I had underfloor heating installed in my bathroom and the sparks connected into my upstairs ring (its just a 2m2 mat). Reading on here the RCD should be a lower rating for this application?

out of interest, with this RCD its total load should not exceed 80amps?

Yet we see 5x 32amp MCBs connected to it? Is this overloaded?

Or am I way off?

pompeygit - cheers for the response, was not sure what figure i was looking at!

That puts my mind at rest.

The total of MCB's usually exceeds the main switch rating these days. If we worked to that rule, some houses would need 300amp supplies! Not going to happen, and far from needed!

Diversity is applied acorss the installation.

cabinman - my technical knowledge is pretty light but as far as i understand, although there are 5 MCB's i can only find that three of them do anything (upstairs socket ring, downstairs socket ring that does not include the kitchen and garge socket ring).

I bought the house two years ago and inherited the current setup, though some things i have found do worry me. Shoudl i have the RCD replced with a higher value one then?

Ohh i should say, its a split load box, there are 4 MCB's on the other side, 3 x 6amp that feed the lighting circuits and 1 x 40amp that supplies the kicthen (gas range cooker before you all panic).

ahhh thought that might be the case (diversity) - thanks Lectrician :)

Your only issue is that each of the MCBs should have soemthing written on the label above it to tell you what each one does.

You can sort that out yourself - turn each one off in turn and go round the house to see what isnt working!

Yes i had to do that a while ago, out of shot is a piece of card numbered the same as the CU with each circuit detailed. Shame there are two MCB's on the CU that appear to do nothing, very confusing.

You should look inside the CU, or have someone look if you aren't confident about removing the cover, and see if there are any cables coming out of those MCBs. If there are don't turn them on, as you've no idea where the cables go, and what's been done to any ends.

B.A.S.

Bit late with your advice as they are already in the 'On' position.
