    Collapsing lintel and supported RSJs

Thanks - by bearing, do you mean the surface the lintel sits on? The current owner is very amenable, so I think I'll see if I can talk him into breaking off the plaster in the kitchen on the outside wall to see what's going on under. As for the doorway - I recall the door closed properly. I...

    Collapsing lintel and supported RSJs

Sorry - just realized I hadn't described the outside cracks that well - but the image should show you what I meant. The outside wall is 'inside' a lean-to conservatory. The owner said he had plastered straight onto the brickwork. Outside: http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/6484/img3qf7.jpg...

    Collapsing lintel and supported RSJs

Hi, I know this issue really needs the eye of a structural engineer but I'm initially looking for thoughts on what might be involved in the best and worst cases. Just so I know where this might be heading. I'm looking to buy an old Victorian terraced house but the homebuyers survey came...

    replacing imperial sized radiator

Hi, I'm after replacing an old imperial sized radiator in the bathroom. Its 25" (680mm) wide. Looking through previous posts, the simplest solution is to use a 600mm wide rad with two 40mm extentions. The two valves at each end look fine and I'd rather keep them than have to remove...

    emergency combi boiler question

Thanks for the info. No, I didn't isolate the boiler. I guess from the question, I should have?

    emergency combi boiler question

Hi, I've had a problem with the central heating. I was removing a rad but one of the valves is damaged and the circuit is draining itself. I'm letting that empty so I can replace the valves but in the mean time - if I keep the central heating off, can I still run the hot water? The...

large bathroom wall tiles on damaged and uneven surface.

Just a thought.... I've seen various panels that can be used instead of tiling. Some are cheap PVC and dont look too nice - and others "Mermaid" and "wetwall" look great but cost a fortune. Any suggestions on something inbetween? Thanks

large bathroom wall tiles on damaged and uneven surface.

Hi, A minor DIY job is turning major for a tiling newbie. I wonder if some folks can help. I have a bath in the corner of a small bathroom. The tiles are old and damaged and the plan was to just replace them. I tried removing the ones at the top end of the bath but the wall appears to...

NEW RAD INSTALLED IN PLACE OF OLD ONE. NEW ONE NOT VERY WARM

Try turning off the other rads in the house to see if it might be a balancing issue. Also the TRV could be suspect. How big is the rad compared to the old one? Did the old one get very hot?

"A remote system is attempting to access your computer

Don't be worried about background noise - there can be a lot of traffic generated by folks trying to connect to mistyped addresses, trying to connect to a machine that had previously been assigned that IP address etc. Basically, unless it tallies with something your doing, block it and dont...

    Wireless Network Probs...

Sounds a bit of a mess :). OK - could be a lot of things but this is first thoughts. If the second is dependent upon the first - then I suggest you might have internet sharing turned on on this machine. Whatever, I recommend starting again from scratch rather than fiddling about. Also...

"A remote system is attempting to access your computer

A site wouldn't be trying to access your computer - if you mean a website. It could any manner of things and if Norton defaults to saying allow - then it might be a reply in response to an outgoing request. Can you detail the exact messages? It could be random sweeps from nare-do-wells...
