    Anti downdraft cowl

Hope this is the right forum  Getting quite a downdraft (but only on occasion) into my wood-burning stove. It's not all the time because the flue has been cleaned and only happens when the wind picks up. So to the question, what is the best sort of cowl to stop these downdrafts, as...

    Gas cylinder cutting out

Just as a follow up... Went out and bought a new regulator valve this morning and a gas engineer was in the shop mentioned that it had a small 'air balance' hole in the side which would fill with water if it was fitted upside down and that if it froze in the cold weather it would cause the...

    Gas cylinder cutting out

Hi Mickyg, The cylinder is kept against an outside wall, and it goes from a short flexible into a copper pipe. All in all not more than about a metre and a half I suppose. Had a frost last night and I had the regulator valve covered with an old blanket and it seems to be working OK this...

    Gas cylinder cutting out

Sounds good guys thanks. Just one more question if I may - I have looked on Amazon (where else these days!) for a regulator and there are two types. A screw on one which I have, and a clip on one. Are they interchangeable and if so, which would you recommend? Cheers again.

    Gas cylinder cutting out

Is that the bit on the gas cylinder, or on the cooker itself Micky? Cheers

    Gas cylinder cutting out

Same cooker from day one Ian, and the last time it went off with just the grill was being used. It has also cut out when the oven has been used on it's own and when one of the hob burners has been used - so it may not be a problem with demand. Could I have an issue with the cooker itself...

    Gas cylinder cutting out

Thanks for the two quick replies! We do not have a change over valve on it. We just roll in new cylinder when it is empty and connect it up. That flat item between the cylinder valve and the feed pipe, is it called a diaphragm? For the life of me I can only think that is what's causing the...

    Gas cylinder cutting out

Not sure if this fits in on this forum but maybe somebody here will know. For our cooker, for the last couple of years we have been using a 47kg propane gas cylinders to supply it with gas. Our current one which was connected about 2 months ago still seems pretty full going by the weight...

    Cordless angle grinders?

These 18v cordless will work fine from a 12v car battery. Just pick up a cheap one - perhaps with a duff battery, cable it up with a pair of crock clips one end and leave it in the car boot..... just in case you need to cut a padlock of a certain device - which shall remain nameless. Power to...

Wood burner, backing plate or tiles?

Hmm, interesting. I'll run that past the Mrs. As said I'm just worried it'll look awful if I tile or even brick up the wall - made worse of course by spending both time and money! Cheers

Wood burner, backing plate or tiles?

DIY decorating although the stove was a professional installer who made no mention of the wall which is papered over plaster over stone. The stove sits about 6" away from the wall.

Wood burner, backing plate or tiles?

We have a free standing wood burner behind which had been papered. Now of course it is starting to peel off having dried out so much. So what now? I was quoted £70 for a slab of 1m2 8mm steel plate that I could fix to the wall, and tiles of course are the other option but how and what...

    Slate floor

Our kitchen has a floor made up of quite large natural slate slabs one of which has been damaged in the past and repaired with cement... and it looks a mess. Any ideas out there on what I can use to repair it? I'm thinking maybe I can chisel out the old cement and fill the hole with some sort...

    Insulation ??

We had our roof done two years ago and it cost us £8k. The roofer was able to reuse half of the original tiles and fitted second hand Welsh slates to match and finish. Copper nails were used throughout, all new battens, and silver foil insulation. Good job and a good price we reckon. He also...
